The crimes and killings began in early 2003, nearly five years ago and quickly reached genocidal proportions. By the end of 2007 the estimated number of dead in Darfur from massacres, malnutrition, disease, rape and torture ranged from a low of 200,000 to a high of 500,000. (Save Darfur Coalition declared that the death toll is 400,000, with well-known authority on Sudan, Prof. Eric Reeves, believes ''that approximately 500,000 civilians have died in Darfur and Eastern Chad from all causes.'' ) In December 2007 Roberta Cohen, a Senior Fellow at Brookings Institute, accused the government of Sudan of having '' prevented compilation of credible mortality statistics,'' adding that ''there has been a systematic effort by the regime of Omar Hassan al-Bashir to cover up the death toll in Darfur. The government of Sudan has claimed that only 9,000 have died.''
